Branch
A branch might mean a part of a tree in regular English, but in business English, it refers to a local office.
Date
A date might be commonly understood as a romantic outing. In business English, however, it translates to “appointment”.
Party
A party might refer to a festive event, but in business English, it can refer to a person/group of people involved.
Management
“Management” refers to individuals who hold the responsibility of running a business.
Asset
An “asset” is any item that has a given value.
Invoice
An “invoice” is a bill that itemises the goods and/or services provided, alongside the quantity purchased and their corresponding prices.
Consensus
“Consensus” is used when individuals agree upon a proposal, an idea, or an opinion as a group.
give & provide
Regular English:
Give him your report.
Business English:
Please provide him with your report.
In this example, “provide” is deemed as more formal – and therefore more appropriate in the workplace – compared to the more casual “give”.
talk & discuss
Regular English:
Let’s talk about this.
Business Englis
h:
Let us discuss this.
Talk is a word that connotes informality. You can have a “talk” with other people you do not need to do business with. “Discuss”, on the other hand, gives a sense of formality and professionalism that is absent in casual discussions.
help & assistance
Regular English:
I need some help.
Business English:
I require some assistance.
Similarly, asking for help suggests a more casual discussion. Requiring some assistance from a colleague, however, adds a sense of formality and professionalism.
make sure & ensure
Regular English:
Do make sure that she comes tomorrow.
Business English:
Please ensure that she comes tomorrow.
Besides sounding more professional, using “ensure” instead of “make sure” adds an element of brevity to the sentence, which is preferred in Business English.
tell more & elaborate
Regular English:
Can you tell me more about the issue?
Business English:
Can you elaborate on the issue?
Instead of using several words to explain something, one word can be used to simplify and summarise the same idea. In Business English, brevity is favoured over verbosity. The underlying idea is that people have little time to spare in the workplace, so the quicker you transmit your message, the sooner you and/or your colleagues can get back to the work you are doing.
